Chief Test Driver

How on earth do you beat Rolf, the chief test driver in FD mode? Basically you race eachother in '73 911 RS on the Corsica track.

His car seems much faster than mine even though I thought they were supposed to be evenly matched. I can catch him in the steep hairpins but he always manages to beat me by at least 10 seconds to the finish line.

Am I missing something? I seem to be doing well and I have lots of practice with the '73 from my evolution career.
