Evolution Mode

Do you have to finish evolution mode to be real fast? I noticed that when I race on the net, the other cars (same ones) leave me in the dust on a straight away. I cannot get the speed these other racers are getting. I have just started the evolution mode and have completed only the first easy ones in the 50's.
