Multiplayer and Updating Problems in NFS5

I have Windows 2000 (and yes, it is supposed to be supported), and NFS5 runs fine, except using the Online gaming feature. I tried using it, and it said my game needed to be updated, and the game updater may be corrupt, and to reinstall it and try again. I did, and same result. I ran the game updater and I get the error message "mrtIsUpdateAvailable returned MRT_PARM_ERR" then "Could not connect to site. Please try later". Anyone know if there's a way to solve this?
