Opponent cars

Hi!
I've got some question abount nfspu.
1. As I pass finish line my car is uncontrolled. Sometimes after that
I drive into the wall or other cars and I get some damage!!!
Sometimes I drive to the finish line carefully and don't break anything
but at the end I get some additional damage. Can somebody explain
me source of it?
2. Can opponents upgrade their cars? For example, I passed some
tournament. I decided to pass it again so I upgraded my car and
started it. Did my opponents upgrade their cars too or they drive
on the same cars (same as in the first-time passing)?
